On Monday night, New Japan announced that El Phantasmo needed “to take indefinite leave due to health concerns,” leaving fans wondering what was wrong with the Canadian wrestler. And while most assumed it was injury-related, Phantasmo has since taken to social media platform X to disclose that following tests and scans, it’s been discovered he has “a little tumour of cancer,” bravely adding, “I’m in good spirits, and I’m not nervous, worried or scared.”
38-year-old began his wrestling journey in 2005, and after more than a decade working independent shows in Canada and Europe, received his big break by signing for New Japan in 2019. Subsequently, he would join the Bullet Club, going on to share a ring with star names like Will Ospreay, Bandido, Jushin Liger and Hiroshi Tanahashi. Additionally, due to New Japan’s working relationship with TNA, he would get to work in the United States for several matches between 2021 and 2023.
