Kenny Omega Reveals Why AEW Return Announcement Surprised Him

Kenny Omega is currently sidelined after being diagnosed with diverticulitis last December. However, the Canada Life Center in Winnipeg recently announced on X that he would appear at next week’s Dynamite, which obviously delighted AEW fans. Yet, Omega has now revealed that at the time of the announcement, he hadn’t actually agreed to return, telling his Twitch viewers that it was just a “maybe.”

“Kind of surprised to hear it. I remember thinking about maybe showing up to Winnipeg, and it was a maybe it really was just a maybe. And then I, I saw that my sister and my parents, my, my auntie who lives in Calgary, she’d said, ‘oh my goodness, we’ve heard the big news.’ And I said, ‘What, what big news, what the big news?’ And she said, yeah, the arena is advertising your return.

I thought, come on, man, I’m like, I’m 80% on board, 80% on board, maybe. But like, I don’t know, man. And then I thought, well, I guess they’ve advertise me, and I guess that 80 becomes a 100, whatever. So I called the boss, and I said, ‘Hey, man, um, you want to run a graphic or something? I guess I’ll show up.'”

Even with Omega returning to AEW television, it appears to only be a one-off. This is because it was recently reported that after alternative treatments failed to help him, he is set for diverticulitis surgery shortly. How much longer this will keep him from the ring isn’t confirmed, although as it is considered major surgery, it seems doubtful he’ll return before the summer at the earliest.
