Classic rocker John Mellencamp has had a lengthy and successful career full of memorable songs. He’s also had his fair share of mega-hits including “Jack & Diane,” “Pink Houses,” “Authority Song,” “R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.,” “Cherry Bomb,” “Hurts So Good,” “Check It Out,” and “Small Town,” among several others.
Mellencamp can get a bit testy on stage, however, especially when overzealous audience members shout out for him to play his hits. At a concert last weekend in Toledo, Mellencamp went off on hecklers during his set and briefly stopped his show early. A TikTok video shows Mellencamp telling a story from the stage when an audience member shouts at him to “play some music.” The crowd boos the heckler, and Mellencamp responded: “What do you think I’ve been doing, you c*cksucker? Here’s the thing, man. You don’t know me. You don’t f*cking know me. Hey Joe, find this guy and let me see him after the show.”
Mellencamp tried to continue his story, but then gets interrupted again by a heckler demanding to hear “Authority Song.” “Guys, I can stop this show right now and just go home,” he told the crowd. “Tell you what I’m gonna do. Since you’ve been so wonderful, I’m gonna cut about 10 songs out of the show. Here we go.”
He then played a few seconds of “Jack & Diane” before announcing, “Know what? Show’s over.” He did end up returning about five minutes later to perform the rest of the set.
It’s not the first time Mellencamp has gotten frustrated at someone in the audience while on stage. Last May in Cleveland he threatened to end the show early when an audience member yelled, “Play the f*cking music.”
“Listen, hey, you guys, if these people don’t shut the f*ck up I’m just going to leave, OK?” Mellencamp said in Cleveland. “Because I’m not used to this crap. Look, guys, if I wanted to play in this type of drunken environment, I’d play outside or I’d play in an arena.”
