Jimmy Buffett, the singer/songwriter known for his party hits like “Margaritaville,” “Come Monday,” “Why Don’t We Get Drunk” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” has passed away at the age of 76.

“Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” read a statement via his social media. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.” A cause of his passing was not given.

Buffett crafted what he called “drunk Caribbean rock ’n’ roll” in the late ’60s, and in total he released 31 studio albums. His 32nd, “Equal Strain on All Parts,” is expected later this year.

Buffett also had a number of successful business ventures including an entire Margaritaville brand which included tequila, a record company, casinos, restaurants and resorts, among other things. Forbes estimated his total worth at near $1 billion earlier this year.

“I’m not about to apologize for being a good businessman,” Buffett was quoted as saying in the late ’90s when his business empire began to expand.

“Too many people in music have ruined their lives because they weren’t. I’m not a great singer, and I’m only a so-so guitar player … There’s never been any grand plan to this thing. I’m making it up as I go along … Just trying to work the system while maintaining my ‘60s anarchic soul.”

“Margaritaville” was inspired by a day-drinking episode in Austin, Texas, and it was an immediate hit when released in 1977.

“So Saddened To Hear About The Loss Of My Great Friend Jimmy Buffett!” wrote wrestling legend Ric Flair. “30 Years Of Friendship! He Was An Amazing Entertainer Who Made The World A Better Place! Thank You Jimmy! Rest In Peace!”
