Goldberg Addresses The Rumor He Changed The Finish To His Infamous Match With The Fiend

Heading into WrestleMania 36, it looked like WWE’s plan was for The Fiend vs. Roman Reigns to be one of the show’s featured matches. However, to the shock of everyone watching, The Fiend would lose the Universal Championship to Goldberg at Super ShowDown in Saudi Arabia, with Vince McMahon s deciding to have Goldberg vs. Reigns instead. Yet some fans and critics would accuse Goldberg of having the finish changed, so he went over and took the WrestleMania spot. And now, during an interview with SHAK Wrestling, the WCW legend would address these claims. Specifically denying this and saying he’s never said no to putting someone over, although he would acknowledge refusing to work with Chris Jericho previously due to feeling it wasn’t suitable for his character.

I’m a talent, and I do what the boss tells me to do. I flew to Saudi Arabia, knowing I was going to lose. Then somehow, it changed, and the finish was different. It surely wasn’t me because it’s an extremely selfish move to do.

Goldberg

I’ve never said no to putting anybody over. Maybe back in WCW, I didn’t agree with putting Jericho over or something like that. If I can remember correctly because I didn’t think it was time for the character to be involved in any comedy. But not in a million years in that Fiend situation in Saudi would I have done that. No way in hell. I’d love to see him face-to-face and make sure there is not one percent of his being that believes that I changed that match. That’s the first time I’ve actually been able to defend myself in that situation.

Goldberg

WrestleMania 36 would end up falling apart due to worldwide events, and Reigns wouldn’t compete on the show. Instead, Braun Strowman would face Goldberg in one of the worst matches in WrestleMania history and end up as Universal Champion. Ultimately though, Strowman would lose the title to The Fiend at SummerSlam later that year before Reigns initiated his record-breaking run, which is approaching 700 days. This allowed McMahon to eventually get his match between Goldberg and Reigns when the pair fought at Elimination Chamber earlier this year. And to the surprise of nobody, it was predictably a dud, ending Goldberg’s WWE return with a whimper.
