Former WWE Tag Team Champion Announces He Is Seeking Help Following Substance Abuse Relapse

René Goguen, better known to wrestling fans as René Duprée, had everything required to be a huge star in the pro wrestling business. However, a painkiller addiction would derail his career, and he was effectively finished on the big stage well before his 40th birthday. Thankfully, he would get the help he needed, and his life appeared to be going in the right direction.

Yet proving how hard these habits can be to overcome, Duprée has announced via a YouTube video that he will be attending Narcotics Anonymous from now on, following Monday night’s episode of his podcast where he worried viewers due to having mixed benzodiazepine with alcohol prior to going live.

“Unfortunately, ever since my father passed away over a year ago, I’ve been suffering from a lot of anxiety issues. I’ve been prescribed benzodiazepine to take care of my anxiety issues. For anybody that knows, mixing alcohol with benzos is a very bad thing to do. Thus resulting in my inebriated state last night…I want to apologize to everybody … I’ve made the decision to start going to meetings again, Narcotics Anonymous.

I wanna thank all the fans who supported me through this. I’m gonna persevere, it’s just a bump in the road. Thank you guys so much. I apologize again from the bottom of my heart for my behavior and unprofessionalism last night.”

Second-generation Duprée signed with WWE at the age of just 18 and, after a brief spell in OVW, would form a tag team named La Résistance alongside Sylvain Grenier on Raw. Subsequntly, he would become the first man to win a WWE championship as a teenager when he and Grenier won the World Tag Team Championship from Kane and Rob Van Dam at 2003’s Bad Blood. Yet this would arguably be his career highlight, as while he would remain featured for several more years, he never progressed above the midcard and ultimately asked for his release in 2007.
