Last year, the Foo Fighters paid tribute to their late drummer Taylor Hawkins with two historic tribute concerts in London and Los Angeles.

“Ladies and gentlemen, tonight we’ve gathered here to celebrate the life, the music and the love of our dear friend, our bandmate, our brother Taylor Hawkins,” said Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl as he stood next to his bandmates to kick off the London show.

Hawkins’ son, Shane, stole the show when he got behind the kit for an emotional performance of the Foo Fighters classic, “My Hero.” Many reacted to the highly touching performance. Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian said: “Shane Hawkins played like it’s his throne. Not a dry eye over here. Cheers Shane.” Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider posted: “Holy sh*t. Chills. Just chills. Beautiful.”

On Saturday, the band paid tribute to Hawkins on what would have been his 51st birthday with a black-and-white photo of the drummer with the caption, “Miss you so much.” The post yielded thousands of comments, likes and shares, and among those to chime in included Korn drummer Ray Lazier, Queens of the Stone Age’s Alain Johannes, Radkey and Dave Grohl’s daughter Violet.

During his career with the Foo Fighters, Hawkins became one of the most beloved drummers in rock. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2021. He sadly passed away on March 25 of last year while on tour with the band in Bogota, Colombia. He is survived by his wife, Alison, and three children.

Foo Fighters addressed their fans a few months ago saying they vowed to carry on as a “different band” going forward.

“As we say goodbye to the most difficult and tragic year that our band has ever known, we are reminded of how thankful we are for the people that we love and cherish most, and for the loved ones who are no longer with us,” the band’s statement read.

“Foo Fighters were formed 27 years ago to represent the healing power of music and a continuation of life. And for the past 27 years our fans have built a worldwide community, a devoted support system that has helped us all get through the darkest of times together. A place to share our joy and our pain, our hopes and fears, and to join in a chorus of life together through music. Without Taylor, we never would have become the band that we were — and without Taylor, we know that we’re going to be a different band going forward.”

“We also know that you, the fans, meant as much to Taylor as he meant to you and we know that when we see you again — and we will soon — he’ll be there in spirit with all of us every night.”
