Many fans were disappointed when it was reported that WWE had no intention of airing “The Roast of WrestleMania.” However, as the show would be unscripted and potentially cover sensitive topics, it made sense for WWE to keep it under wraps. Yet, despite the company’s insistence that fans put their phones in pouches during the show, clips have been leaking all week, and now the entire show’s audio has found its way to YouTube, although WWE would quickly have it taken down.
Still, with it now being online, fans have found various ways to listen, and many do not like what they heard. This is because while a roast is a form of insult comedy, those participating picked on several names who weren’t even in attendance and, therefore, hadn’t given their approval to be roasted. Examples of this, which have caused upset online, were Nia Jax making fun of Charlotte Flair’s face and marriages, while Paul Heyman mocked the fact that Freddie Prinze Jr.’s father took his own life, despite neither being on the panel.
“The Roast of WrestleMania” was the brainchild of Tony Hinchcliffe, who has previously been very open about his pro wrestling fandom. Therefore, given that both sides have a connection to Netflix, it made sense for them to work together. Nevertheless, many fans were disappointed that WWE agreed to work with Hinchcliffe in the first place, given that he recently described Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage,” and the company has several wrestlers of Puerto Rican descent on the roster. However, with WWE being so obsessed with working with celebrities, it’s doubtful this was even a consideration.
