The Super Bowl halftime show has rarely featured rock performers. The Who did the football spectacle in 2010, and Aerosmith performed in 2001, albeit alongside N’Sync, Britney Spears and other pop acts.

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty and The Rolling Stones have also appeared on past halftime shows, but more recent performers — Rihanna, Eminem, The Weeknd, Shakira, Maroon 5, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, and Beyonce highlight the sort of acts often pegged to do the show.

Hip-hop/R&B star Jay-Z and his company, Roc Nation, produce the event, and Apple Music is its primary sponsor. Super Bowl halftime performers also generally don’t get paid anything for the appearance since the NFL views it as such a publicity tool for the artists that perform.

The 2024 Super Bowl is set for Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Nevada, and the state’s governor wants to inject some rock into the proceedings. Joe Lombardo was asked who he would like to see play the Super Bowl, and without hesitation the governor said “AC/DC!” enthusiastically.  “I was going to yell it out … But yeah, I’m serious. Bring ’em back.”

Lombardo made his comments at the NFL and Super Bowl LVIII Host Committee press conference last week. The halftime show performer will be announced this fall.

It’s not the first time AC/DC has been championed to be the halftime act. Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider was very vocal about AC/DC or Metallica being chosen to perform.

“Hey @NFL! Your go-to songs at EVERY game are metal: Enter Sandman, Cum On Feel the Noise, Thunderstruck, Crazy Train, We’re Not Gonna Take It, We Are the Champions, Final Countdown, I Wanna Rock, We Will Rock You, Welcome to Jungle. NONE of those bands have EVER played half-time show!” Snider wrote in 2019.
