ECW Original Reveals He Hated Working For WWE

The Sandman worked for WWE between 2006 and 2007, and while to most pro wrestlers, this would be a career-high, the ECW original had never dreamed of working for Vince McMahon. And now, during an interview on Rob Van Dam’s podcast, the 61-year-old has revealed how much he hated his time in WWE, noting he couldn’t drink beer because it was Steve Austin’s gimmick and despite getting a $25,000 pay increase he would try to limit the amount of time he spent at the building by frequently leaving early.

“Johnny [Laurinaitis] calls me into his office, and he goes, ‘You can’t drink the beer anymore,’ And I’m like, ‘What?’ And I’m pissed. I’m like, ‘Johnny, how about you give me my release? He’s like, ‘Hak, wait.’ And I got two raises or at least one raise out of them by asking for my release, but it was up to like $125,000 to $150,000, but then I find out I gotta stop drinking … I hated it there, dude. I had no friends. It was soul-sucking. It honestly was soul-sucking to me. I hated to get on a plane. I hated to go there. I hated to be in the locker room. I couldn’t wait to get out of the f*cking building. Everybody goes on TV and they want to get as much time as they can. They had to tell me to stop going home early.”The Sandman

The Sandman, real name James Fullington, broke into the business in 1989, and while it took him several years to get over, he never looked back once he did. Initially, he made his name in ECW and subsequently worked for FMW, WCW, WWE, and TNA over the next two decades. Still, despite making good money wrestling, he also maintained his own construction company, ensuring he doesn’t need to wrestle like many of his ECW peers, and does so nowadays due to loving the business.
