If you watched WWE television in the ’90s, you almost certainly know who Earl Hebner is, as he was arguably the most prominent referee of the time. However, in 2005, the company fired him and his identical twin brother Dave, claiming they had been caught selling WWE merchandise without permission from a store and even their car at shows.

And now, twenty years later, Hebner has attempted to set the record straight while speaking to Ten Count Media, saying, “It was all a lie,” and blaming John Laurinaitis for their departures.

“I partnered with a guy, and the merchandise was bought from the same people that WWF bought theirs from. But the whole deal was that when Johnny came in with WCW, if you look back, a lot of their agents started disappearing because Johnny wanted to use his own agents. My brother was an agent, and he was Vince’s right-hand man. So, the whole thing was a big lie anyway. As for the t-shirts, Johnny fired me because he wanted to get rid of my brother … Why would I give up a $250,000-a-year job for a $12 t-shirt? It never made sense to me. The truth was never told, it was all a lie.”Earl Hebner

After his WWE departure, Hebner debuted for TNA at their Against All Odds pay-per-view in 2006, refereeing the main event of Christian Cage vs. Jeff Jarrett. From there, Hebner’s son, Brian, also started working for the company, and the former WWE talent went on to establish himself as a TNA mainstay. Subsequently, he was inducted into TNA’s Hall of Fame in 2015, although to this day, many fans believe he deserves the same recognition by WWE.
