CM Punk is a two-time AEW World Champion, initially winning the title against Adam Page and then against Jon Moxley. However, his reigns could have been much more successful, as he was injured for most of his initial run. With his second run ending almost as soon as it began because he tore his triceps in the match in which he won the belt. And now, according to Dax Harwood, speaking on his new podcast, Punk never even wanted to be champion. Instead, he just wanted to channel his inner Cyndi Lauper and “have fun,” which is certainly not how anyone would describe how his runs ended.
Punk was still so joyous and happy to be in the wrestling business. To be honest, he told me, when they were going to put the belt on him, that he didn’t want the belt. He said, “I just want to have fun,” but he understood that Tony putting the belt on him would put AEW in a better light. He took it, begrudgingly a little bit, but he took the belt.
Dax HarwoodCurrently, CM Punk’s future is up in the air, as while he is injured, AEW won’t release him. Although, there have been talks of a buyout, with the stumbling block being that Punk wants a shorter non-compete than AEW is comfortable with. Nevertheless, it seems doubtful Punk will ever step foot in an AEW ring again, so there appears to be no chance he’ll have to worry about becoming a three-time champion.
