Curtis Axel Calls Former WCW Star “A Fat Slob”

Third-generation wrestler Curtis Axel had some considerable boots to fill due to his grandfather being Larry “The Axe” Hennig and his father “Mr. Perfect.” And while he would achieve success by winning the Intercontinental Championship during his 13-year run with WWE, to many, he went down as a missed opportunity. Still, some felt he lacked the presence of his father to ever truly live up to fans’ expectations, and among his critics have been Konnan, who would bluntly say Axel was not entertaining.

Yet despite the former WCW star’s comments coming almost a decade ago, Axel clearly holds a grudge, as during an interview with Monte and The Pharaoh, he would put Konnan on blast. In this, he would reveal that the Cuban struggled to hold his own in the ring with his father back in the day and called him both a “piece of sh*t” and “a fat slob.

“This dude said I was not entertaining. I don’t even know what he said. He just tweeted I was not entertaining, I was boring, whatever, not over, whatever. I tweeted him back, saying, ‘Did you blow yourself up writing that tweet? Because I know you blew yourself up wrestling my dad. You’ve never been sh*t.’ So, me and him got into it for a second, but that was years ago. But he’s a piece of sh*t, I don’t care about him. He’s a fat slob, man. He never worked good matches.”

Axel trained under Harley Race, Brad Rheingans, and his father in 2007, which led to his signing with WWE and being assigned to its developmental territory, FCW. At the time, many fans believed he would be the next breakout star, although after he was renamed Michael McGillicutty, seemingly to distance himself from his grandfather and father, doubts began to set in.

Still, after years of not doing much on the main roster, he would finally receive a push when he was renamed Curtis Axel, and after defeating Triple H, Sin Cara, and Chris Jericho, he would win the Intercontinental Championship. This would end up being his singles career highlight, and after being featured as a tag team wrestler alongside Bo Dallas, he was released in 2020 due to budget cuts.
