Kevin Owens joined WWE in 2014 and has exceeded everyone’s expectations by becoming a Grand Slam Champion and twice headlining Night 1 of WrestleMania. However, last year, he revealed his contract was expiring in early 2025, resulting in speculation that he could potentially be AEW-bound given Tony Khan’s willingness to offer ex-WWE talents huge money deals if he feels they could be a difference maker.
Yet, despite this possibility, Owens seemingly decided not to explore free agency, as on Friday, he very specifically promised on X to “keep wrestling for at least 4 years, 11 months, and 22 days more.” And now Fightful Select has confirmed he did re-sign, having inked a new five-year deal over the Royal Rumble weekend.
40-year-old Owens made his name in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Ring of Honor before signing with WWE. Yet, while it was always known how talented he was, many suspected his look would hold him back, considering that Vince McMahon typically looked to push those with a bodybuilder physique. Still, Owens would seemingly never be held back because of this, becoming a featured performer in both NXT and the main roster, achieving his career goal of becoming a WWE World Champion in 2016 by defeating Big Cass, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins in a fatal four-way match on Raw for the vacant Universal Championship.
