This week’s episode of Dynamite kicked off with a promo by CM Punk, and during this, he would call out Adam Page for an AEW Championship rematch. Yet, Page was nowhere to be seen, and Punk would go on to mock him, saying, “that’s not cowboy sh*t, that’s coward sh*t,” before addressing Jon Moxley. This came across as very strange on television, and subsequently, it’s been reported by various sources that this verbiage wasn’t scripted. And now Bryan Alvarez has revealed on Wrestling Observer Live that the promo has resulted in the former WWE star having backstage heat due to making the well-liked Page look foolish.
There were a few people furious at CM Punk backstage because Hangman is a well-liked guy. So they’re mad at Punk. Also, you have people who are on Punk’s side who say Hangman started this, so they’re mad that you’re mad at CM Punk. I know this is pro wrestling, and we have the MJF deal, but I was told that it’s not. It was started when Hangman was unprofessional, and CM Punk followed that up by making Hangman look like a fool.
The belief is that Punk was giving Page a receipt for past comments that upset him during the build to their match Double or Nothing, with his first opportunity since returning from injury. And while that is a possibility given Punk’s track record, it isn’t confirmed. Regardless though, Punk has come out looking very unprofessional and given his haters further opportunity to criticize him.
The big question now will be whether AEW decides to turn this into a feud or simply ignores the situation. However, given Punk kayfabed fans regarding his recovery from injury, and the promotion turned MJF’s contract frustrations into a storyline, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility this is all an elaborate angle to build a real rematch between the pair.
