Brian Wilson, a rock ’n’ roll visionary and co-founder and primary songwriter for legendary rock act The Beach Boys, has passed away at the age of 82. His family shared the news on social media writing: “We are heartbroken to announce that our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. We are at a loss for words right now. Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world.”
Shortly after the death of his wife and manager Melinda in early 2024, it was announced that Wilson had been suffering from dementia.
The Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” album is regarded as one of the most influential records of all time for the innovations Wilson applied via his songwriting and studio techniques. The Beatles’ Paul McCartney said of the album: “It was Pet Sounds that blew me out of the water,” Paul McCartney said in 1997. “I’ve just bought my kids each a copy of it for their education in life — I figure no one is educated musically ’til they’ve heard that album.”
Wilson said in a 1988 interview: “I try to be something that I can. I really don’t take it too seriously – who looks up to me or not – y’know, because I’m afraid that if I did, I might just take a tumble to the bottom of the barrel. I’m real scared about being left in the dust, and I don’t want somebody to leave me in the dust to figure the whole thing out.”
