Ash Irvine’s Paranormal Paragraphs: The Kelly Hopkinsville Encounter

When researching UFOs and other strange and unusual phenomena, you may wonder, has anyone ever seen any little green men in person? That’s precisely what we are discussing in today’s paranormal paragraphs; in fact, the phrase “little green men” comes from the story of the Kelly Hopkinsville Encounter, one of the strangest UFO-related experiences ever recorded.

On the night of August 21, 1955, in Kelly, Kentucky. A large group of friends and family had gathered with Glennie Lankford, the family’s matriarch, for a relaxing dinner. The group numbered 11 in total, eight adults and three children. The group’s dinner was to take place on the Sutton family farm with a close friend Billy Ray Taylor, and While visiting his friend, Elmer “Lucky” Sutton, at his farmhouse in the tiny town of Kelly, Billy Ray Taylor went outside to the well to collect some water. Then, something shooting across the sky piqued his curiosity. He claimed to have seen a silver metallic object with an exhaust quote “real bright, with an exhaust all the colors of the rainbow.

What happens next is quite strange; Taylor goes inside the house and begins telling the occupants that he has just seen a UFO, which was popularized by the media at the time. The group did not believe him at first, that is, until the dogs that were outside started to bark at something that was approaching the house. The group later described what they had seen to
the police.

They later described the invaders as having round “oversized” heads and long arms with talons that nearly touched the ground. Everything about them seemed to shimmer and glow in the darkness: their eyes glowed with a “yellowish light,” and their bodies glinted like they were made of a “silver metal.” The family was not going to leave without a fight; they armed themselves with firearms and prepared to defend themselves.

As they waited in their home, one of the assailants pushed their face against the window. The family fired at the entity, and Taylor claimed to have heard the shot connects with a metallic bang. Over the next few hours, the aliens got close and then retreated into the shadows. They flipped into the trees when the humans tried to shoot them; often, the bullets connected with their intended targets, but no damage was done.

Eventually, the family realized they needed help, so in a lull in the firefight, they made their way outside when one of the creatures allegedly reached down from the roof and pulled the hair of Billy Ray Taylor; after this, the family piled into their car and fled to the police station. When they reached the station, four policemen returned to the house and found evidence of guns being fired with shell casings on the ground but no evidence of any aliens.

The next day the investigations continued, but no significant evidence had been gleaned concerning aliens. However, even though no evidence of any little green men could be found, at least one of the officers believed them. Sergeant Frank Dudas was not among the officers who visited the Sutton farmhouse, but he’d had his own alien encounter. The summer before, Dudas and another officer reported seeing three silver flying saucers while driving through the forest.

So what happened to the Suttons on that fateful night? Theories range from owls to all 11 residents being in a drunken stupor due to too much moonshine. Other ideas think that the Suttons had faked the entire incident to gain popularity and fame, as following the encounter, many tourists showed up to the house to see if they could also see some extraterrestrials. Still, the Suttons were country folk and hated the attention that had come from this event.

Whether it was owls, alcohol, or aliens from another galaxy, one thing is for sure…this encounter may have helped to spark interest in the UFO phenomena in modern America. Regardless, whatever happened that crazy night in Kentucky was strange enough that we are still talking about it almost 70 years later right here, on the Paranormal Paragraphs!
