Anthrax recently wrapped up a U.S. tour with Black Label Society and Hatebreed. Earlier this summer, it was announced that Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante will fill in for late drummer Vinnie Paul for a Pantera tour next year. Benante said: “I can’t go do this as the drummer from Anthrax because it would be a different sound completely. So the way I’m gonna do that is if you close your eyes, it’s gonna sound like it’s Vinnie, basically. And that’s how it’s gonna be… The sound is gonna sound exactly like him.

Anthrax was gearing up for the European leg of their tour which was scheduled to start on Sept. 27 in the U.K. Earlier this week, though, the band announced that the trek has been canceled. “Sadly due to ongoing logistical issues and 2022 costs that are out of our control, we have no other option but to cancel the European leg of our upcoming 2022 tour,” the band wrote. “We will however be coming to the UK as scheduled. Tickets can be refunded at point of purchase”.

Many fans were upset with the decision, and some were speculating on the band’s Facebook page that there were other reasons for the cancelation. Anthrax insists that is not the case. One fan wrote: “Here it goes again, when band have low sales or expectations they cancel tours and fans get reimbursed losing money for admin fees and/or hotel purchased in advance. Capitalism (which Americans love so much) implies a minimum of risk against higher profit incomes if/when everything goes well. This is not fair. You’re losing fans this way.”

Anthrax replied: “Rest assured, there were zero issues with sales. Check out the news over there for a few minutes. We absolutely adore the European fans and love playing there and are very sad not to come. It doesn’t work “example” when tour buses double and triple in cost.”

Stryper recently canceled a tour for the same reasons. The band wrote last month:  “It is with a heavy heart that we are postponing most of our September tour dates to the Spring / Summer of 2023. Refunds will be automatically issued. If you have purchased a meet and greet through STRYPER’s Etix page, those will be refunded as well. New dates for next year are being rescheduled now. We will be able to keep several of the 2022 tour dates as scheduled, including the Texas dates, the International and destination dates. (Details in the Tour section of Stryper.com).”

“Unfortunately there were some economic cards stacked against us. Anyone in the music business will tell you about the Tour Bus and Labor shortage out there. We’re feeling it first hand. The Tour Bus business is like the housing market right now with 10 times more bands trying to rent buses than are available. And you’ve seen the cost of gas lately. When you’re putting 10,000+ miles on a bus, as we were planning to do, gas prices absolutely matter for a tour like ours. There are some other issues at hand as well that played a part in our decision to postpone the tour. As you all can imagine, we’re very disappointed to have to make this decision. At the same time, we’re excited about what’s to come.”
