In news seemingly coming out of nowhere, shortly before WrestleMania 41 Night 1, it was announced during the pre-show that WWE had acquired Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, better known to fans as just AAA. This was a huge shock, as it wasn’t even known that the Mexican promotion was for sale, and it is currently expected that AAA will eventually become the Mexican version of NXT.
And now, while speaking at the Sports Summit conference, Dorian Roldán Peña, the current CEO of AAA, has revealed that the sale was made due to a lack of sponsorship funds, noting that he approached a potential sponsor three weeks ago for money but was turned down because “the money is in football, the money is in the Super Bowl.“
For those unaware, AAA was formed when Antonio Peña broke away from CMLL in 1992 to launch his own company, featuring a more sports entertainment-oriented spin. He did this because he wanted more creative freedom and managed to take many of the young and underutilized CMLL roster with him. Therefore, even 33 years later, CMLL still refuses to forgive and forget, and considering they are currently working with AEW, the rivalry will likely only intensify due to WWE’s involvement.
